Below I will provide a summary of the content covered in Session #1 of Part 2: Evangelism which was covered on January 26th, 2014.
First, here is the key verse for this session:
And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” ~ Matthew 9:35-38 (ESV)
In our first class of Evangelism 101 we looked at how Jesus was moved with compassion for the unsaved. We went over Matthew 9:35-38 and how to pray that God will raise up his people to bring in the harvest. The video that we watched, How to Cultivate Compassion for the Lost, captures this idea of witnessing while combining it with the love of Jesus to bring the Good News to the world. The video also went over some ideas of why Christians are not sharing their faith. Among them were reasons such as fear, feeling unprepared to share the Gospel, thinking one must make friends before sharing the good news and patiently wait for an opportunity that may never come (also called "friendship evangelism" which proves to be highly ineffective), and finally the sensitive issue of false conversion (someone never being saved to begin with, therefore they don't share their faith because they have not been renewed by the Holy Spirit).
While on the topic of false conversion Greg shared a preview of his testimony and how he was a false convert for most of his life. He was graciously saved by the mercy of Jesus Christ when he was 21 years old, but grew up thinking he was a Christian and having all his relatives tell him he was saved since a very young age. It was not until he saw Kirk Cameron witnessing to people on the street through a television show that he soon realized his need for repentance and faith in Christ. Since then Greg has had a passion for the lost and has joined a group of guys (including myself) on the streets of Rapid City at events such as Summer Nights to share the gospel with those that are willing to stop and converse.
